Weekend Round Up

Its the weekend and its time for me to catch up on some news from the week.  Its been a busy week for me with school and starting a part time job which has meant less time for writing so here we go.

Canadian World Championship Team
Cycling Canada announced who will be wearing the Maple Leaf in Ponferrada, Spain for the World Championship.  National road and time trial champion Svien Tuft will race the time trial on the 23rd while Christian Meyer, Michael Woods, and Ryan Anderson will participate in the road race on the 28th.  Canada’s women will be lead by Leah Kirchmann.

Svein Tuft will represent Canada in the time trial.

Team Time Trial
The World Championship in Ponferrada, Spain kicks off tomorrow, Sunday, September 22, with the team time trial.  Contested by the trade teams, the race to watch will take place between defending champions OmegaPharma-QuickStep and last year’s runners up Orica-GreenEdge.  Orica-GreenEdge will look to get revenge for last year when they lost by 0.8 seconds.  Canadian Svein Tuft leads the way for Orica-GreenEdge against World Time Trial Champion Tony Martin and his OmegaPharma-QuickStep team.  Bradley Wiggin’s Team Sky look a safe bet to round out the podium.

Tony Martin and OmegaPharma-QuickStep look favourites to defend their title.

The women’s Team Time Trial also goes tomorrow with Specialized-Lululemon looking set to defend their world title.  Specialized-Lululemon have dominated every team time trial on this season’s World Cup circuit but could come up against a hard challenge from a very strong Rabobank-Liv team.  The woman are no push overs which will make this a good event to watch.  Last year Specialized-Lululemon had an average speed higher than a number of the men’s teams.

Global Cycling Network Predictions
Global Cycling Network posted a video with their preview of the World Championships yesterday on their Youtube channel.  Daniel Loyd, Matt Stephens, and Simon Richardson offer a good insight into what to expect this coming week in Ponferrada but if you are looking to place some wagers on this years event, you might want to look elsewhere.
