Gerrans Takes Double
It was a great weekend for Simon Gerrans and Orica-GreenEdge. The Australian national champion grabbed the win today in Montreal to follow up on his victory on Friday in Quebec. Gerrans becomes the first rider to win both the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec and Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal, an impressive accomplishment for the Aussie.
Like the circuit in Quebec, the course in Montreal offered a good challenge for competitors with a total of 3893 meters of climbing. Like all good one day races, the challenging course would ensure a select group would contest the final sprint.
Orica-GreenEdge got their lead out perfect and launched Gerrans to an easy victory. Gerrans had no problem out sprinted his opposition as he opened a large gap on World Champion Rui Costa who finished second. Tony Gallopin of Lotto Belisol rounded out the podium by taking third.
The win in Montreal caps off what has been a great swing through Canada for the Australian team. They complete the sweep of Canadian World Tour events with Daryl Impey winning the Tour of Alberta and Simon Gerrans taking the victories in Montreal and Quebec.
